My science background gives me a deep understanding of sustainability and biodiversity. I encourage clients to take practical steps to improve the environmental impact of their garden.
Water in the garden
Water is important in a sustainable garden and I love to install wildlife ponds whenever appropriate. A real luxury is a natural swimming pond. You will be able to swim in clear chlorine free water that has been filtered through reed beds at the side of the pond.
Recycling
Locally sourced and recycled materials make a garden that quickly looks established and fits with the local architecture.
Composting
Composting is an essential activity in a truly sustainable garden.
Kitchen waste, some weeds and shredded prunings can all be made into
compost and used as an organic mulch to conserve water, suppress weeds
and condition the soil.
Plant choice
I choose plants that are suitable for their site that grow well with the minimum of maintenance and without pesticides.
Wildlife
A garden that includes a variety of habitats and changes with the seasons, will also attract insects, birds and other wildlife.
Rainwater harvesting
Rainwater can often be stored and used to top up ponds and for irrigation.
